Useful Hints

The yarn may twist while you are stitching. To untwist it, let needle and yarn dangle down from canvas.

Finish each area, cut the yarn and start work in another area, thus avoiding unanticipated consumption of yarn. Furthermore, this practice improves the appearance of the reverse side of the piece.

Avoid stitch tension; the yarn should lay over the canvas threads evenly to avoid distortions. However, if defects appear and the finished piece is distorted, use the finishing procedure below in the following order:

  • Hold the finished work against a strong light to check for missed stitches.
  • Cut all yarn end on the reverse side.
  • Trace with pencil (don't use ballpoints, etc.) on heavy paper or cardboard, the exact size of the embroidered piece (including the unworked margins). Check for perfect squareness of lines.
  • Tack down tracing on a board, table of floor.
  • Dampen the backside of the embroidery lightly and evenly with a cloth or sponge moistened in cold water.
  • Place piece, right side down, on the tracing.
  • Fix the edges of the piece with thumbtacks along the pencil traced lines at intervals of 3/4" to 1", handling the work with care so as not to stretch it beyond the market limit.
  • Leave the work pinned down for approximately 24 hours.
  • Press with damp cloth until thoroughly dry
  • Let if cool off before removing tacks.

Thus, your work will be ready to receive any kind of finishing or framing.
